Representatives of the DOJF and its member organisations played an integral part as members of the committee charged with drafting the first ever National Disability Policy in Sri Lanka. This is now a legal document and provides a multi-sectoral approach to end discrimination against disabled people. Realising the limitations, however, of the existing Disability Act (No 28 of 1996) to support the implementation of the National Disability Policy, the DOJF made a proposal to the National Council for Persons with Disability (NCPD) to have the current Act reviewed and amended. As a result a 5-member committee was formed, which included the DOJF President. The work of the committee has been completed and their recommendations are currently under review by the government

As a Joint Front we were able to influence the Government of Sri Lanka, to examine the problems of people with disability within tsunami-affected areas.

Through newspaper articles and radio programmes and other forms of media we continue to advocate positive news within Sri Lanka on behalf of people with disability.

We circulate a magazine – Atha Hitha four times a year to members and other interested people and organisations, including national libraries, provincial councils, universities and public schools etc.
